The invention refers to an apparatus and to a method for wrapping an object. The object is on an object support. A wrapping unit drive (8) rotates a wrapping unit part (3, 30.1) with a holder (30.1) for wrapping material around the object. A barrier (1.I) in a protecting position provides a mechanical safety mechanism (5.I, 7.I, 10.I, 17.I). When the barrier (1.1) is moved into a further position, an interrupter (7.1, 17.1) is moved into an interrupting position and interrupts a supply connection (6.1, 6.2) for the wrapping unit drive (8). Thereby the wrapping unit part (3, 30.1) is no longer rotated.
