Provided is the use of garcinol ((1R,5R,7R)-3-(3,4-Dihydroxybenzoyl)-4-hydroxy-5-[(2S)-2-isopropenyl-5-methyl-4-hexen-1-yl]-8,8-dimethyl-1,7-bis(3-methyl-2-buten-1-yl)bicyclo[3.3.1]non-3-ene-2,9-dione) as a hepatoprotectant and for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, non-alcohol steatohepatitis, alcohol abuse leading to hepatotoxicity, chemotherapy induced hepatotoxicity, and viral induced acute or chronic hepatitis. Garcinol is a compound extracted from the fruit rind of Garcinia sp.
