A bone anchor with improved fixation is described. The bone anchor includes a radially projecting rib extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body and the bone anchor. The leading distal edge of each rib may be configured with a tapered "knife-edge" configuration. Such a rib can alleviate the excavation effect and can preserve the contact between the rib and the surrounding bone along the length of the anchor.
