A method for the control or repellency of one or more of insects selected fromthe group ofbiting flies, house flies, ticks, ants, fleas, biting midges, cockroaches,spiders and stink bugs. Themethod comprises bringing the insects into contact with an inhibitoryeffective amount of at least oneof the compounds of the structure (I)(see formula I)whereinR is selected from the group consisting of -OH, =O, -OC(O)R4, -OR6, and -(OR6)2, wherein each R6 isindependently selected from an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atomsand R4 is a branchedor straight chain, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl group with zero to twodouble bonds and from1 to 15 carbon atoms; X is CH 2; wherein the at least one of the compounds ofstructure (I) is appliedto the skin in the form of wipes, lotions, creams, oils, or sprays.
