The invention is directed to a method for reducing discomfort caused bytranscutaneous stimulation. The method includes providing transcutaneousstimulation, reducing the transcutaneous stimulation at a first location, andsubstantially maintaining the transcutaneous stimulation at a second location. The transcutaneous stimulation may be created by electric and/or magneticfields. The first location may be relatively proximate to the cutaneoussurface and may comprise tissue, nerve and muscle. The second location may berelatively deeper than the first location and include, for example, braintissue that requires the transcutaneous stimulation for treatment purposes. The invention further may include locating a conductor (105) on a treatmentarea and/or a transcutaneous stimulation device (100) relative to the firstlocation. The method may include adjusting how much the transcutaneousstimulation is reduced at the first location.
