PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a humectant having a hydroxyalkylated hyaluronic acid as an active constituent and excellent moisture retention effect.SOLUTION: The humectant includes a hydroxyalkylated hyaluronic acid represented by general formula (I) (where R1-R6 is independently a hydrogen atom or an ether bonded hydroxyalkyl group but all of them are not hydrogen atoms, R7 is a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal atom and n is an integer of 1-10,000). In the hydroxyalkylated hyaluronic acid, the number of hydroxyalkyl groups is preferably 1-10 the hydroxyalkyl group is preferably one or two or greater members selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxypropyl group, 2-hydroxybutyl group and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl group.
