The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for determining a channel used for brainwave measurement. A method for determining an optimal channel according to an embodiment comprises the steps of: (a) extracting the features of brainwaves from signals measured through activated channels by particles of a particle group in which the activated channels among the entire channels used for detecting the features of brainwaves are indicated with binary values； (b) comparing a value indicative of the extracted features of the brainwaves with a predefined value to calculate the accuracy of the activated channels suited to detect the features of the brainwaves； (c) calculating a value of a fitness function in which the calculated accuracy is reflected； (d) comparing the calculated value of the fitness function with a value of a fitness function for an optimum channel combination calculated from the entire particle group up to now； (e) based on the comparison result, updating the variation of the position of each particle in the initial particle group and the binary value of the position of each particle； and if a repeated number of (a) to (e) steps satisfies a preset number, determining a new optimum channel combination at the time when satisfying the preset number as a final channel combination to be used for detecting the features of the brainwaves.
