PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an environment of controlled climatic conditions with controlled supply of nutrients and feed water. SOLUTION: A process for breeding plants is provided, comprising the step of growing plants of a single species in an array of vessels filled with a growing medium of uniform characteristics and, when required to ensure at least substantially uniform exposure of all plants in the vessels to conditions in the environment, the step of changing the positions of the vessels within the environment. Preferably, this process also includes the step of identifying the plants' phenotypic characteristics (e.g. the plants' growth, harvest and resistance to nonbiological stress) at time intervals during their growing period.
