PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for identifying a plant individual by which the number of genes of the plant individual can be determined easily and rapidly, and further to provide a method for breeding the plant by which the plant can easily and rapidly be bred by utilizing the method. SOLUTION: The method for identifying the plant individual is the one for identifying the plant individual based on a genetic information corresponding to a well-known target gene in a plant genome, and is constituted of a quantitative PCR step and an electrophoretic staining step. The quantitative PCR step is the step for carrying out the PCR by using a genome DNA extracted from the plant in a prescribed concentration, a PCR primer of the target gene, and a competitor DNA bondable to the PCR primer in a prescribed concentration. The electrophoretic staining step is the step for electrophoretically staining the PCR product, separating the PCR product of the genome DNA from the competitor DNA so as to be distinguishable, and measuring the staining ratio of both bands. The method for breeding the plant is the one for obtaining a transformed plant having an objective character based on the genetic information specified by the method for identifying the plant individual.
