The present invention relates to a rat catching system with integrated refuse bin, and method for catching rats. The system according to the invention comprises:- a housing provided with a number of side walls and configured for the housing being placed in the ground- a grating plate which can be arranged on an upper side of the housing and is provided with a number of openings for passage of refuse, including cigarette ends- a collecting receptacle for collecting the refuse- an opening arranged in the grating plate and configured for a rat and- a trap construction configured to catch the rat.
