The present invention relates to the use of volatile antimicrobial compounds against pathogens that adversely affect humans, comprising contacting an infected area with an atmosphere containing an effective amount of a volatile antimicrobial compound in gaseous form. Volatile antimicrobial compounds that are provided include certain oxaborole compounds such as benzoxaborole. Delivery systems are provided to benefit from the volatility properties of these antimicrobial compounds.
