A method of stimulating hair growth in humans, comprising applying to the human skin an effective amount of a compound of 3.7 or 3 and 7 of thia or oxo-prostanoic acid represented by the formula I where the dashed lines represent the α configuration, the triangle represents the β configuration, and the dashed line indicates the presence or absence of a double bond; A and B are independently selected from the group consisting of O, S and CH; provided that at least one of A or B is S; D is a covalent bond or CH, O, S or NH; X is COR, CONR, CHOR, P (O) (OR), CONRSOR, SONR, tetrazole or triazole; Y is O, halogen or cyano; Z is CH or a covalent bond; R is H or R; R is H, R, or COR; and, R is C-C lower alkyl or alkenyl, and R is hydrocarbyl or a substituted derivative thereof, where the substituents can be selected from the group consisting of C-C1-6alkyl, halogen, CF, CN, NO, NR, COR, and OR in free form, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, in combination with a pharmaceutical carrier, adapted for topical application to the skin of a mammal. 2. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that Y is O.3. The method according to claim 2, characterized in that the concentration of the applied compound is from about 0.0000001% to about 50% by weight of the pharmaceutical carrier.
