PURPOSE: A composition containing a Malvae Fructus extract or a compound isolated from the same for preventing alopecia or promoting hair growth is provided to enhance proliferation of dermal papilla cell and generation of beta-catenin phosphorylation and various cytokine. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing alopecia or promoting hair growth contains one or more compounds as active ingredients, selected from the group consisting of beta-sitosterol, 3-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-beta-sitosterol, and 3-O-&lsqb；beta-D-(6'-linoleoyl)glucopyranosyl&rsqb；-beta-sitosterol which are isolated from a Malvae Fructus extract. The extract is prepared by extracting pulverized Malvae Fructus seeds using a solvent selected from water, C1-C4 alcohol, and a mixture thereof.
