According to the present invention, it is verified that a Curcuma longa L. extract inhibits type-II 5-alpha reductase under in vitro and in vivo conditions in a rat in which benign prostatic hyperplasia is induced and in prostate cells, and has an effect on reduction of prostate weight. Accordingly, the Curcuma longa L. extract can be practically used to treat and prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a Curcuma longa L. extract for prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia comprises the Curcuma longa L. extract in a content of 0.001-50 wt% with respect to the total weight of the composition.본 발명은 울금 추출물이 전립선 비대 유도 백서와 전립선 세포에서 in vitro 및 in vivo에서 제2형 5-알파 리덕타아제를 저해하며, 전립선 무게 감소효과를 나타냄를 확인함으로서 전립선 비대증의 치료 및 예방에 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.
