Coating system 1 comprising a sprayer 3 capable of spraying a coating fluid on to surface 2 which is mounted on a bed 5 apart from the sprayer, characterised in that a spray modifier 21 is associated with the sprayer which in use modifies a physical characteristic of the produced spray. The sprayer may be an ultrasonic sprayer, the modifier may be a source of convective heat or electromagnetic radiation which may be infrared, ultraviolet or microwave radiation. The system may include at least one sensor 29 to measure a characteristic of the spray or coating on the surface. The sensor may be connected to a controller to control operation of the sprayer, the spray modifier or both in response to measurements from the sensor. The bed of the system may include a conveyor assembly 9 which may be a vacuum conveyor.
