A food production system having improved heat and nutrient recovery isdisclosed. The system employswaste biomass and comprises a composter that partially composts the wastebiomass, an invertebrate (e.g.worms) culture unit, a delivery subsystem to deliver partially composted wastebiomass from thecomposter to the invertebrate culture unit in a temperature range suitable forthe invertebrate culture, afood (e.g. fish or crustaceans) culture unit for producing the food operatingin a temperature rangesuitable for the food culture, a delivery subsystem to deliver invertebratesfrom the invertebrate cultureunit to the food culture unit, and a heat exchange subsystem providing forexchange of heat from thecomposter to the food culture unit. The subsystem comprises a controller forcontrolling the exchange ofheat such that the food culture unit is maintained in the temperature rangeselected for the food culture.
