Die Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung eines Hydrogels, welches α-L-Guluronsäure (GuIUA) und/oder β-D-Mannuronsäure (ManUA) haltige Oligo- oder Polysaccharide enthält, zur Behandlung von Beschädigungen des Nervensystems, zur Förderung des Nervenwachstums, zur Prophylaxe von Nervenschädigungen bei chirurgischen Eingriffen und zur Behandlung und Prophylaxe von neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen. Aufgabe der Erfindung ist es, das Wachstum von Neuriten von Nervenzellen gezielt zu fördern und/oder die Adhäsion von Neuronen auf Oberflächen, insbesondere von Zellkulturgefäßen, zu steigern. Das erfindungsgemäß verwendete Hydrogel wird dafür in Gegenwart von zwei- oder mehrwertigen Kationen mit einer Konzentration von maximal 4 mmol/1 hergestellt.
