The guide wire 5 comprises a first portion extending along a first longitudinal axis, and a second and third portion connected to and extending distally from a distal end of the first portion. At least a portion of each of the second and third portions extend along second and third longitudinal axes. The second and third portions are in a first configuration while inside a constraining through bore of a surgical tool and a 10 second configuration when outside said through bore. The second and third longitudinal axes are substantially parallel to the first longitudinal axis in the first configuration, and the second and third longitudinal axes are not substantially parallel to the first longitudinal axis in the second configuration. The second and third portions provide for substantial recoverable deformation from the second 15 configuration back to the first configuration upon axially withdrawing the guide wire.
