A nonwoven laminate 5 has a spunbond 20 meltblown 10 spunbond 20 (SMS) structure. The laminate 5 has an abrasion resistance of at least 5,000 rubs and a microbiological filtration performance log reduction factor (LRF) ≥ 3. Preferably, the laminate 5 is calendered between flat heated metal rollers (105, 110, figure 6) and the layers autogenously bonded. The meltblown fibres are preferably polyethylene or polypropylene having average diameter = 0.5-2 µm. The spunbond filaments are preferably metallocene catalysed polypropylene or core-sheath filaments having average diameter <; 19 µm. The production and use are also claimed.
