Disclosed is a method for producing irradiated edible residues comprising: irradiating edible residues that have been produced as a by-product of an ethanol manufacturing process that utilizes a cellulosic or lignocellulosic feedstocks, wherein the edible residues comprise undigested cellulose, and the ethanol manufacturing process includes reducing the recalcitrance of the cellulosic or lignocellulosic feedstock.
