PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen generator capable of production with a simple structure suited to installation and maintenance and also at a low cost.SOLUTION: Provided is a hydrogen generator comprising: an electrode part 2A electrolyzing water, provided with a hydrogen pole 22 and an oxygen pole 23 so as to hold both the sides of a PEM membrane 24 in a sealed container； and a power source part 3 applying d.c. voltage to a space between the hydrogen pole 22 and the oxygen pole 23 in the electrode part 2A, in which an electrode material for water electrolysis containing no platinum group elements is used as a hydrogen pole catalyst layer in the hydrogen pole 22 or an oxygen pole catalyst layer in the oxygen pole 23. The electrode material for water electrolysis is made of a molded body essentially consisting of Fe or Ni, and being a molded body at least including, as metallic material, Fe or Ni and a plurality of different transition metals belonging to 3d transition metals.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
