The invention relates to a process for preparing a scaffold-type product for reconstruction of major bone defects. According to the invention, the process comprises a two-stage treatment, i.e. a mechanical and a thermal stage, of a proteinaceous material consisting of bovine bone tissue, resulting in a ceramic powder of hydroxyapatite (HAP) having particle sizes of 100...200 μm, which are mixed and homogenized with a sodium pyrophosphate solution 0.1...0.5 M, at a solution : HAP ratio of 1:3...1:4, correlated with the preset HAP : tricalcium phosphate (TCP) ratio. The resulting paste is compacted by pressing at a force of 10...500 MPa, in cylindrical moulds with a diameter of 10...50 mm, the resulting cylindrical ceramic body being machined as to provide it with holes with a diameter of 1...3 mm, at a maximal space between the holes which maintains vascularization, for bone regeneration, the product being further subjected to a thermal treatment of sintering at 1000°C under air-argon atmosphere, for 2 h, to finally result in a scaffold-type product having a bi-phase or single-phase composition, such as 70% HAP - 30% TCP or 100%HAP - 0% TCP, a theoretical porosity of 27% and a pore size of 0.8...2000 μm.
