A device for training dogs comprising a housing (10, fig 1) mounted on a strap (12, fig 1) adapted to be fixed to a hand, a sound generator 14 within the housing adapted to produce a sound when activated, a sensing device 16 to activate the sound generator and a battery 18 to power the sound generator. The sensing device comprises a strain gauge 16 configured to sense a change in strain applied by a user. Preferably the strap comprises first and second portions 20, 22 connected by a strain gauge portion 24 on which the strain gauge is mounted. The strain gauge responds to strain in the strap. The device can produce a variety of sounds which can be recorded and stored. The pitch and volume of the sound may be varied according to the sensed strain. The device can be programmed.
