PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for automatically generating an optimal 2D medical image from a 3D medical image are provided to supply the optimal 2D image to medical professionals by extracting from the 3D medical image. CONSTITUTION: A 2D image generator is composed of an input(21), an image processor(22), a storage(23), an output(24) and a user interface(25). The input transmits 3D volume image data from a 3D image detection device to the image processor. The output outputs a 2D image with an image display device. The input and the output connect the image processor and the 3D image detection device.3차원 의료 영상으로부터 최적의 2차원 의료 영상을 자동으로 생성하는 방법 및 장치에 따르면, 환자의 신체 부위를 3차원적으로 나타내는 3차원 볼륨의 영상 데이터로부터 3차원 볼륨을 횡단하는 적어도 하나의 가상 평면을 생성하고, 이 가상 평면을 이용하여 신체 부위의 단면을 나타내는 적어도 하나의 2차원 영상을 생성하고, 적어도 하나의 2차원 영상 중에서 환자의 진단에 최적인 2차원 영상을 출력한다.
