A planter has a body provided with openings 12 for growing plants which is shaped to have a reducing cross-sectional area in a upward vertical direction, e.g. cone or pyramid shaped. The planter is preferably formed with a core element (8, Fig. 2) on which the body is supported and a stand 6 may also be provided on which the core is mounted. The core member may be hollow and heating means (24, Fig. 2) may be provided in the hollow core. Ideally an opening in the top allows for irrigation, which may be automated, and a drain 12 is provided in the base. In one embodiment (Fig. 4) the body is formed from a polythene tube 116, filled with growing medium, which is wound in a spiral manner around a conical core 108. Openings are provided as slits.
