The present invention addresses the problem of providing a method for acquiring and producing kidney progenitor cells having a high degree of purity from a cell population obtained by inducing differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into kidney progenitor cells by identifying a kidney progenitor specific cell surface antigen marker. A method for preparing kidney progenitor cells obtained by inducing differentiation of pluripotent stem cells which includes: (i) a step for cultivating pluripotent stem cells under conditions that induce differentiation into kidney progenitor cells and (ii) a step for sorting a cell population from the cells obtained in step (i) by using at least one cell surface marker selected from the group consisting of CD9( ) CD55( ) CD106(+) CD140a(+) CD140b(+) CD165(+) CD271(+) and CD326( ).
