PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a humectant having high water solubility and excellent humectant properties, and an external preparation for the skin, using the humectant.SOLUTION: The humectant comprises a polyuronic acid obtained by selectively converting a primary hydroxy group of a polysaccharide to a carboxy group or a salt thereof by oxidizing the polysaccharide. The external preparation for the skin contains the humectant. The polyuronic acid obtained by oxidizing the polysaccharide comprising N-acetylglucosamine or a glucose, e.g. chitin or cellulose is preferably used.
