Methods for treating adult mammals for diseases associated with aging are provided. Embodiments of the method include enhancing TIMP activity, e.g., TIMP2 activity, in a mammal in a manner sufficient to treat an adult mammal for a disease associated with aging. Also provided are compositions for use in practicing the methods of the present invention.
