An absorbent article that can be more easily adapted to meet the needs of individual wearers of the absorbent article. The absorbent article may have a top sheet layer, a back sheet layer, and an absorbent core between the top sheet layer and the back sheet layer. The backsheet layer may have a garment attachment mechanism located on the garment facing side of the backsheet layer. The absorbent article is located above the garment attachment mechanism and may further have a protective layer fastened to such garment attachment mechanism. The protective layer may be at least partially unfastened from the garment attachment mechanism.
