The fingerprint authentication smart card 102 comprises an active capacitive fingerprint sensor 130 and an array of electrodes 34, 36, 38 disposed on the bezel 30 surrounding the scan area of the fingerprint sensor 130. The smart card 102 is configured to supply a drive voltage signal for the fingerprint sensor 130 via the drive electrode 38 and to supply a plurality of time-varying characteristic measurement voltage signals via the emission electrode 34. The smart card 102 is further configured to detect the characteristic measurement voltage signal via each detection electrode 36 after transmission through the finger. The smart card 102 verifies the identity of the finger bearer using the fingerprint sensor 102 and verifies the physical properties of the finger using the detected characteristic measurement voltage signal.
