PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a humectant capable of making the skin preserve an enough water content, capable of maintaining softness and moisture retaining properties of the skin, and not causing deterioration in a sense of use, such as a sticky feeling, agreeability with the skin or the like, even when mixed into a cosmetic.
SOLUTION: This humectant comprises a component (a) carboxymethyl-&beta-glucan or its salt and a component (b) a culture solution of lactic acid bacteria and/or a culture solution of bifidobacteria as active ingredients.
