To provide an improved apparatus realizing a passive safety shield for a needle of a needle-based medical device which shields the needle prior to releasing from a device.SOLUTION: A needle shielding device includes: a hub having a longitudinal axis； a needle 14 having a sharp distal tip； and a needle shield assembly 30 attached to the needle 14 and movable from a non-shielding position to a shielding position. In the shielding position, the sharp distal tip 16 is covered by at least part of the needle shield assembly 30.
