PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved device for wound suturing, tissue approximation, tissue support, tissue suspension and/or tissue fixation.SOLUTION: A suture assembly 10 includes an elongated flexible body 20 which supports a plurality of shaped tissue-engaging elements 30-47 in a generally spaced arrangement thereon. The flexible body may be either a single filament or a multiple strand braided or woven body. A curved body 14 having a sharp point 15 is joined to one end of the flexible body while a straight body 11 is joined to the other end of the flexible body 20. In an alternate embodiment, tissue-engaging elements define a variety of cross-section shapes. In an other alternate embodiment, the tissue-engaging elements are divided into first and second oppositely facing sets to provide a bidirectional suture.
