The present invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing phenytoin or phenytoin sodium for use in topical pain relief. Said use of the pharmaceutical composition of the invention reduces peripheral neuropathic pain. The topical pharmaceutical compositions of the invention containing phenytoin or phenytoin sodium, surprisingly reduce peripheral neuropathic pain considerably, especially and preferably in the conditions, characterized by a low to moderate grade of peripheral neurogenic inflammation, such as small fiber neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, chronic idiopathic axonal polyneuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, trigeminus neuralgia, chemotherapy induced polyneuropathy, traumatic neuropathies, compression neuropathies, and infectious neuropathies in remission, according to the invention.La présente invention concerne des compositions pharmaceutiques contenant de la phénytoïne ou de la phénytoïne sodium destinées à être utilisées dans le soulagement de la douleur topique. Ladite utilisation de la composition pharmaceutique selon l'invention réduit la douleur neuropathique périphérique. Les compositions pharmaceutiques à usage topique selon l'invention contenant de la phénytoïne ou de la phénytoïne sodium, réduisent de manière surprenante et considérable la douleur neuropathique périphérique, notamment et de préférence dans les conditions caractérisées par un degré faible à modéré d'inflammation neurogène périphérique, telle que la neuropathie des petites fibres, la neuropathie diabétique, la polyneuropathie axonale idiopathique chronique, la névralgie post-herpétique, la névralgie du trijumeau, la polyneuropathie induite par la chimiothérapie, les neuropathies traumatiques, les neuropathies de compression et les neuropathies infectieuses en rémission.
