The present invention relates to a method of preventing bacterial growth in a beverage dispensing system. The beverage dispensing system comprises a tapping line (30) which is connected at its first end to a tapping cock and has at its opposite second end a tapping line connector (16). The tapping line connector has a tapping valve actuator (18) and defines a first connector surface (32). The method comprises providing a beverage container (12) filled with preferably a carbonated beverage. The beverage container has a container connector (14) defining a second connector surface (38) and an initially sealed container opening. The second connector surface (38) is covered with a bacteriostatic agent (40). The container connector (14) is connectable to the tapping line connector (16) by contacting the first (32) and second (38) connector surfaces with one another and in doing so transferring a part of the bacteriostatic agent (40) from the second connector surface (38) to the first connector surface (32).
