A composition for modulating skin pigmentation comprising: a) a recombinant Cpf1 protein； and b) a crRNA designed to form a complex with the Cpf1 protein and comprising a guide sequence designed to hybridize with a target sequence in a cell, wherein the composition alters expression of a gene affecting pigmentation of the cell.
