PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an image in accordance with the existence rate of substances to be easily displayed in a photoacoustic image generating apparatus for generating photoacoustic images corresponding to a plurality of wavelengths.SOLUTION: A subject includes two kinds of substances having light absorbency. A light absorber has a light absorption coefficient with respect to the light of a first wavelength and a light absorption coefficient with respect to the light of a second wavelength changed in accordance with the existence rate of the two kinds of substances included. First image generating means 24 generates a first photoacoustic image on the basis of a first photoacoustic signal when the light of the first wavelength is emitted. Second image generating means 25 generates a second photoacoustic image on the basis of a second photoacoustic signal when the light of the second wavelength is emitted.
