In the present invention, provided are the following: a frequency analysis unit that analyzes the frequency of an electrical echo-signal received from an ultrasonic probe, and thereby calculates the frequency spectrum of the echo signal; a band setting unit that sets a characteristic amount calculation-use frequency band in accordance with a transmission drive wave, such frequency band used when calculating the characteristic amount of the frequency spectrum; an intensity correction unit that calculates a corrected frequency spectrum by correcting, using a correction amount determined in accordance with the transmission drive wave, the intensity of the frequency spectrum in the characteristic amount calculation-use frequency band set by the band setting unit; and an approximation unit that extracts the characteristic amount of the corrected frequency spectrum by performing approximation, using the characteristic amount calculation-use frequency band, on the corrected frequency spectrum calculated by the intensity correction unit.
