Disclosed herein is the use of a solid dosage colonic purgative formulation for complete purgation comprising a therapeutically effective amount of polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of at least 4000, an electrolyte comprising a combination of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfate, and a lubricant (preferably magnesium stearate) wherein the formulation is substantially free of any other purgative other than the polyethylene glycol, and wherein the total daily dose of PEG to be administered is from 100 g to 1000 g.
