A gelling foam dressing 40 comprises a sheet of gelling foam 41 laminated with a scrim 43 comprising gelling and non-gelling fibres. Preferably, the scrim is a knitted structure which is knitted from yarn comprising a blend of gelling fibres and non-gelling fibres, and wherein the yarn comprises at least 50% w/w gelling fibres. The gelling fibres may be alginate and/or pectin fibres, whilst the non-gelling fibres can be cellulosic fibres such as viscose. The scrim may be woven. The dressing can comprise a single sheet of foam, to one face of which the scrim is laminated. Alternatively, the scrim may be sandwiched between layers of foam 41, 42. In the latter case, the dressing is manufactured by casting a quantity of gelling material solution into a mould, allowing the solution to partially cure, laying the scrim on top of the partially cured solution, casting a further quantity of a solution of gelling material onto the scrim, allowing the solution to cure further to form a hydrogel and removing the water from the hydrogel to form foam sheets bonded to both sides of the scrim.
