The invention relates to an oral instrument for treating dental plaque on the teeth of a human and/or animal subject. The invention also relates to an oral instrument for treating the gums of a human and/or animal subject. The invention also relates to a human user operated plaque representative signal processing device for use with such an oral instrument. Furthermore the invention also relates to an assembly composed of such an oral instrument and such a human user operated plaque representative signal processing device. In an example of such oral instrument said instrument comprising a teeth interacting unit capable of interacting with the teeth a radiation emitting unit arranged for emitting during use electromagnetic radiation from the teeth interacting unit towards the teeth a radiation detection unit arranged for receiving radiation being reflected back from the teeth and arranged in generating and delivering a signal, said signal being indicative for the presence of dental plaque on the teeth. The oral instrument provides direct and unambiguous information concerning the dental plaque treatment being performed.
