A blunted safety needle is provided, which includes a hollow needle (12) havinga sharp distal tip (17) and a stylus (50) having a blunted end. The stylus is positionedwithin at least a portion of the needle. After the needle is used to deliver or deploya substance and/or a device, the blunted end of the stylus is positioned to extendthrough the sharp distal tip of the needle and un-releaseably lock into position,thereby providing a blunted safety needle assembly.
