PURPOSE: A composition containing Gentianae macrophyllae Radix extract for preventing or treating dental caries is provided to ensure excellent antibacterial effect with persistence and safety. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating dental caries contains 0.01-50 wt% of Gentianae macrophyllae Radix extract as an active ingredient, isolated using water or an organic solvent. The organic solvent is ethanol or an ethanol solution. The extract also includes a fraction which is prepared from the water extract of Gentianae macrophyllae Radix using an organic solvent. The organic solvent is ethylacetate or butanol. A health food for preventing or relieving dental caries contains the extract as an active ingredient. The health food is a food or beverage. [Reference numerals] (AA) Gentianae macrophyllae Radix본 발명은 치아우식증의 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 진교 추출물을 유효성분으로 함유하는 치아우식증의 예방 또는 치료용 구강용 조성물 및 건강식품에 관한 것이다. 상기 진교 추출물은 치아우식균에 대한 항균 효과가 우수하고, 치아우식균의 생육 및 균성장시 방출되는 효소인 글루코실트랜스퍼라제의 활성을 억제하며, 그 효과도 지속적일 뿐만 아니라, 천연물인 진교로부터 추출되어 매우 안전하므로, 치아우식증을 예방 및/또는 치료하기 위한 구강용 조성물 또는 건강식품으로 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
