To provide a seed orientation recognition device and recognition method for determining, by image recognition, the orientation of even a flat seed having variation in size and shape under an inferior environment, and a seed transplanter provided with a seed direction recognition device.SOLUTION: A seed orientation recognition device 100 includes: image capturing means for capturing an image of a region in which a seed is transplanted or a region in which the seed is conveyed； and image processing means for processing an image signal of the image captured by the imaging means to determine the orientation of the seed. The image processing means includes: contour line extraction means for extracting a contour line of the seed from a binarized image signal acquired by binarization means； center calculation means for calculating a center of the seed from the contour line extracted by the contour line extraction means； shape determination means for calculating a distance between the center of the seed calculated by the center calculation means and each point on the contour line, and determining the positions of the top edge and the bottom edge of the seed on the basis of the calculated distance； and orientation determination means for determining the orientation of the seed on the basis of the positions of the top edge and the bottom edge of the seed determined by the shape determination means.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1【課題】大きさや形状のばらつきがある扁平状種についても、劣悪な環境下においてその方向を画像認識で判別する種の方向認識装置及び認識方法並びに種の方向認識装置を備える種植機を提供する。【解決手段】種の方向認識装置１００は、種が播種される領域又は搬送される領域の画像を撮像する撮像手段と、撮像手段により撮像した画像の画像信号を処理して種の方向を判断する画像処理手段とを備える。画像処理手段は、二値化手段で得られた二値化画像信号から種の輪郭線を抽出する輪郭線抽出手段と、輪郭線抽出手段によって抽出された輪郭線から種の中心を算出する中心算出手段と、中心算出手段によって算出された種の中心と輪郭線の各点との距離を算出し、算出した距離に基づいて、種の上端及び下端の位置を判断する形状判断手段と、形状判断手段によって判断された種の上端及び下端の位置に基づいて、種の方向を判断する方向判断手段とを備えている。【選択図】図１
