An anesthetic container includes a receptaclefor holding the anesthetic and having a wall definingan interior space and a passage in fluid communicationwith the interior space. The container also includes avalve assembly that is attachable or is attached to the receptacleto control flow of anesthetic through the passagein the receptacle to a vaporizer. The valve assembly has aclosed configuration when the flow of anesthetic from thereceptacle is limited and an open configuration when theflow of anesthetic is enabled. The valve assembly is constructedso that at least the surface of any component ofthe assembly that will come into contact with the anestheticon its storage or passage from the receptacle to thevaporizer is made of a metal or low-density polyethylene, and provides a fluid-tight seal to prevent the escape of theanesthetic without the use of a gasket in the closed configuration.
