The present invention provides a method of determining cartridge type using a fluid drug infusion system. The fluid drug infusion system includes a pump configured to receive the fluid drug cartridge 100. The fluid drug cartridge includes a barrel 102 that is filled with a fluid drug solution 104. The fluid drug cartridge includes a plunger 106 within the barrel. The plunger is configured to push fluid chemical through the outlet 110 of the barrel. The pump includes an actuator 122 for actuating the plunger to push the fluid chemical through the outlet. The fluid drug infusion system includes a force sensor 128 for measuring force data. The force data indicates the force applied to the plunger by the actuator. The method includes moving the actuator to contact or move the plunger, measuring force data using a force sensor, and generating a feature signal indicative of force modulation from the force data.
