عند حدوث حريق في أي من التنكات المخزن بها المواد البترولية أو المواد القابلة للاشتعال فالذي يتم اشتعاله هو سطح الخزان لوجود الأكسحين في الجو، أما أسفله فلن يصل إليه الحريق، وبناءً على ذلك تم عمل التنك الإضافي (تنك الأمان) حيث يتم ربطه بجميع التنكات (خزانات البترول) المخزن بها المادة القابلة للاشتعال، ويتم ربط التنك من خلال شبكة مواسير وبلوف (محابس ) بالتنك الإضافي، ويتم ربط الشبكة بجهاز إطفاء، ويتم تحديد مادة الإطفاء حسب نوع المادة المشتعلة ويتم سحب المادة التي لم تشتعل أسفل المادة المشتعلة، وبعد أن يتم سحب المادة يتبقى جزء قليل مشتعل أسفل التنك، ثم يتم غلق المحبس المؤدي إلى تنك الأمان، ويتم فتح محبس جهاز الإطفاء ويضخ مادة الإطفاء حسب نوع المادة المشتعلة، وبذلك إخماد الجزء القليل المشتعل داخل التنك وبذلك يتم السيطرة على الحريق والحفاظ على المواد المخزنة.When a fire breaks out in a tank storing oil products or inflammable materials, it is the surface of the tank which ignites, owing to the presence of oxygen in the air. The valve connected to the safety tank is then closed and that of the extinguisher opened.
