The present disclosure generally provides compounds useful as MRI contrast agents. In some aspects, the disclosure provides MRI contrast agents that have been chemically modified to have one or more moieties that include a hydrophobic moiety. In some aspects, the disclosure provides a composition comprising the modified MRI contrast agent and a protein such as albumin or an albumin mimetic. Additionally, the present disclosure provides various uses of these compounds and compositions.
