To provide low substitution hydroxypropyl cellulose having improved moldability and flowability and usable without being restricted in addition amount.
SOLUTION: The method for producing a low substitution hydroxypropyl cellulose powder includes at least: a process for compaction-grinding low substitution hydroxypropyl cellulose having a substitution molar number of 0.1-0.4 per anhydrous glucose unit and which is obtained by etherifying alkali cellulose and a classification process for obtaining the low substitution hydroxypropyl cellulose powder having an average particle diameter of 20-50 &mu m, a 90% cumulative particle diameter of 50-100 &mu m, and a ratio of the 90% cumulative particle diameter to the average particle diameter (90% cumulative particle diameter/average particle diameter) of &le 2.4 by treating the compaction-ground low substitution hydroxypropyl cellulose with a pneumatic classifier.
