Methods and devices for identifying and defining a safety zone for restrictingmovement of arobotic arm in an operating room during a medical procedure are disclosed. Thedisclosed methodutilizes medical navigation system, which receives an initiation inputindicating initiation ofdefining of the safety zone. In response to receiving the initiation input,the system tracks aninstrument and determines the location of the tracked instrument relative to areference point. Thesystem detects changes in the location of the tracked instrument until atermination input isreceived at the medical navigation system. The termination input indicates thetermination of thedefining of the safety zone. The system stores, in memory, change dataindicative of the changes inthe location of the tracked instrument. The data identifies the safety zonerelative to the referencepoint.
